Picked up January 11, 2005:
Zero miles. Average
temperature 20 deg. F
Gas consumption first month (January) 24.607 gallons Miles traveled
1,047miles Average 42.5 MPG
Gas consumption 2d month (February) 28.618 gallons Miles traveled
1231miles Average 43.0 MPG (Seems like mileage is getting better as temperature
goes up.)
First oil change done at 2,714 miles 3.9 Qt's Castrol GTX Toyota oil
filter.
This car has front and rear leg room of a much larger car. Fold down rear seats.
Passing power to spare. Great handling on curves.
If I had to complain about any aspect of this car it would be the stiff ride.
Small breaks in the pavement are felt through the suspension.
I have not had a chance to drive this car in snow. Handles good on twisty back roads and on the
open highways. No problem passing or holding speed going up long hills.
More comments and maintenance to follow as miles accumulate.
June 1, 2005
Update:
Current miles 5,146 Average MPG for March =
46.2 | April = 47.0 | May = 49.0 MPG All around
driving. ( Every tank full averaged for these numbers.)
No problems at all to date. Due for it's first scheduled oil change at
5,000 miles ( Maintenance light on dash came on at 5,000 mi. )
Note: Toyota recommends rotating tires at 5,000 mi.
One minor complaint is the front seat. I find it to firm and the sides put
pressure on my thigh's. I think I have solved the problem by putting a seat pad
in the center of the seat. See
picture! This raises the
center of seat to make it same level as sides. Will comment more after I've
spent time on longer rides.
Getting used to stiffer ride. New England road's are smoother now that there are
no more frost heaves. December 3,
2005 Update:
Current miles 10,000 Average MPG for June through
November 30, 2005 = 48.9 MPG
Change Oil & Filter and rotate tires at 9,521 miles.
Recieved notice of ECM Reprogramming near middle of November. Have not contacted
Toyota yet to have it done. Car running good, no stalling experienced! Traction
Control report: Dec. 1, 2005
On snow or slippery surfaces the traction system in this car will not apply
power to the wheels if both are on a slippery surface.
In my opinion this is a grave safety problem. The same applies to my Toyota
Avalon. However I can turn traction control off in the Avalon.
With traction control off the front wheels will spin thus giving some forward
movement. The Prius can not be turned off and under these conditions the car
will not move if both wheels are on slippery surface. Feels like no power is
allowed to drive the wheels. January

No problems to report. Starts good in cold weather. Heater works good. Some
minor fogging of windows when cold, but using the A/C with heater and outside
air, clears this up within a few miles. April
